When he was in high school, John Lithgow spent a lot of time at the McCarter Theatre, on the campus of Princeton University. Not that he was interested in acting, he was just visiting his dad at work. Arthur Lithgow was the executive director of the McCarter from 1963 to 1971. Back then, the young Lithgow wanted to be a painter. He got stagestruck later after joining the drama club while earning a degree at Harvard.
