From what I've observed, voters are more nuanced than Romney gives them credit for. In  fact, voters regularly vote against their own self interest. Blue states tend to earn more, pay more taxes and get less from government, while red states tend to earn less and receive more federal dollars per tax dollar collected. Romney is revealing himself to be a shallow thinker with deep pockets that's willing to write off a large section of the population that might have otherwise voted for him and republicans are starting to distance themselves. Super PACs raised more money last month than the candidates they support, with the lions share coming from just a few individual mega donors and corporations.  Is this what the Supreme Court had in mind when they ruled on Citizens United vs. Federal Elections Commission? Justice Stevens wrote in his decent "A democracy cannot function effectively when its constituent members believe laws are being bought and sold." I believe Justice Stevens got it right on this one. Mitt spent $1.47 million of campaign funds in Iowa and Super Political Action Committees another $4.5 million on negative ads against his nearest rival, Newt Gingrich (who was hoisted by his own petard). That was enough to eke out an eight vote victory over second place finisher Santorum, who spent a mere $21 thousand.
