Alaska voters embraced the Yin and Yang of Walter J. Hickel by twice electing him Governor. An advocate for big oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and an ardent environmentalist, a member of the Nixon administration and against it’s handling of the Vietnam war, a member of the party of Lincoln and a secessionist. He died Friday of natural causes. He was 90 years old.

President-Elect Obama’s choice for Secretary of the Interior is Senator Ken Salazar.
Salazar earned a Bachelors degree in Political Science from Colorado College and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School. He served as Director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources before being elected Colorado State Attorney General in 1994. He was  and reelected in 2002 before running and being elected to the US Senate in 2004.
