Drawings From My Back Pocket

I never was very disciplined about carrying a sketchbook, hence the newsprint drawings.

But while on vacation I carry a very small pad and a ball point pen in my back pocket.

It’s not meant to document everything I see as much as it’s there to fill up down time.

I would never impose on my family to sit and wait for me to draw, but rather I would break it out while we were souvenir shopping, waiting to get into a museum, or stopping to use the restroom.

Most of these doodles are done in less than a minute.

When added to the hundreds of photos, countless little pieces of paper and receipts and Donna’s journal it helps to bring the memories flooding back..

This year was a special vacation. Donna and I are celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary.

Andrew just finished his undergraduate degree and Alyssa her second year at Rutgers, so I don’t know when, if ever, we will get a chance to all travel like this together.

We laughed a lot, drank and ate a lot, walked a lot, saw so much history and art, and absorbed the atmosphere and culture of Rome, Florence, and Capri.

Ten days I’ll always remember.

Ciao!

Hi Larry, These back pocket drawings have a light airy feel to them. Better than a photograph. I like them!

Love these — especially since they capture a special time (and place) with your family.

Makes me want to dig out a circa 1980 sketchbook that captures what you get when you take 2 friends (straight out of college) + a three month Eurail Pass it equals priceless memories.

Hi Larry, these are great! Looks like it was a fun trip to Rome with your family. I especially love the little old Italian woman in black at the fountain. And of course, ice cream at Piazza Navona! – Ronnie

Your lyrical sketches are so fresh and full of spontaneity and enthusiasm and personality. I also love the accompanying verbal sketch.
